Although tentative, the IHSAA and other unified Associations hope to welcome the Spring activities schedule on May 1st.
So far, the Iowa High School Athletics Association, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, the Iowa High School Music Association and the Iowa High School Speech Association continues to hold to their anticipated renewal of activities on May 1st.
On April 3rd, the Unified Activities associations made an update on their website stating that Governor Kim Reynolds had extended the suspension of activities in order to combat the spread of the coronavirus. Numbers have continued to escalate as of late and, according to the new website “coronavirus.iowa.gov”, April 14th recorded 189 more additional positive cases of the virus and an additional six deaths have been to the ever growing number including one adult (18-40 years of age) from Polk County.
The IHSAA website said that they are still hoping to “offer spring and summer sports opportunities, provided they can be done safely and follow CDC, state, and local guidelines”.
The updated schedule for spring sports has track and golf beginning practice on May 1st with the first competition to begin on May 4th. Post-season lead-up and state competition is slotted to begin on May 28th and June 4th through the 6th, respectively.
Additional updates are likely to occur and will be monitored through the growing pandemic.
