With three teams being represented from our reading area, here is how the guys are fairing in the 2020 Iowa State High School Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines.
Day one of the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament sent three wrestlers from our reading area to the quarterfinal round, three into the consolidation rounds, and ended the season for one.
For our Emmetsburg wrestlers, Bret Hoyman, wrestling at the 152-pound class, was defeated in the first match by Riley Burke of Iowa Falls-Alden by a score of 14-7. Hoyman, to keep his hopes alive for a 3rd place finish, was required to wrestle again on the back side of the brackets. He went up against Bryce Cole of Van Meter/Earlham, a 31-14 senior. With a lot on the line, Hoyman was able to stay true to his grinding style and defeated Cole by a score of 6-3.
Next up for the E-Hawks was Mason Griffin at the 170-pound mark. Griffin, being a veteran in the tournament, made quick work of his opponent from Bondurant-Farrar, Porter Smith, by pinning Smith at the 3:05 minute mark. Smith is a sophomore with an overall record of 25-17.
The final wrestler for the E-Hawks was sophomore Matthew Wirtz who came out for his first appearance at the state tournament in the 182-pound slot. Wirtz has impressed this season, but his time at the big dance came to a close after a 6-0 defeat against Benton Community’s Austin Roos, a junior with a 38-8 record, and then again in the first round of consolidations against Bishop Heelan’s Colby Wilmesherr, a 38-15 senior. Wirtz has a great opportunity at success in following years.
Graettinger-Terrill’s two wrestlers had an outstanding day on the mats for class 1A. Spencer Roth, a senior with a 45-4 record, made a statement in his first match of the tournament by defeating 34-11 junior Zach Taylor of South Winneshiek by way of a tech fall final of 17-2 to move on to the following day at the 160-pound match up.
The second and last Titan to wrestle was Treyton Cacek. The 48-1 senior won by way of pin fall against Kaiden Hendricks of Riverside Oakland; Hendricks is a 30-19 junior.
The final wrestler for our reading area is Estherville Lincoln Central’s freshman, Zavion McMurran. Being the only representative for the team at the 2A Class’s 195-pound class, McMurran has shown an incredible amount of resolve headed into the tournament with an overall record of 38-9. Despite his impressive year, McMurran was pinned in the first match up of the day and was sent to the consolidation round by Mid-Prairie’s senior Isaac Boucher.
In McMurran’s second match of the day, he was able to pin his opponent and went on to live another day in the state tournament.
McMurran was defeated by Red Oak’s 38-4 senior Carter Mayne’s by way of fall at the 1:21 minute mark.
Roth loses to 47-3 junior of Lake Mills, Elijah Wagner by a close and heartbreaking 4-3 decision. Roth will be wrestling against Aidan Udell, a 38-4 sophomore from Riceville, in the consolidation rounds.
Cacek defeated 37-6 freshman Jackson Dewald of Westwood Sloan by way of a 6-1 decision. Cacek will be facing 44-4 sophomore Carson Lynott of West Sioux, Hawarden in the second to last match of the tournament.
Bret Hoyman moves on closer to the 3rd place match at the 152-pound mark after defeating Hunter Pesek by a sudden victory score of 3-1. Hoyman will be 42-15 senior, Kristian Gunderson next.
Mason Griffin was defeated in a sudden victory by a score of 6-2 to the hands of Jax Flynn, a 47-7 senior from Solon. Griffin will be matched up against Caleb Swalla, a 38-1 senior.
