Over the weekend, the Emmetsburg wrestlers traveled to compete against five other local teams in the Sectional Meet
On February 8, the Emmetsburg Wrestling Squad traveled to Humboldt to compete in the 2020 Class 2A Section 2 meet.
The men had their work cut out for them going against five other times to include the hosting squad Humboldt, northern neighbors Estherville Lincoln Central, Okoboji/HMS, Southeast Valley (Gowrie), and Webster City.
Emmetsburg was able to put in the necessary work and placed a total of 12 wrestlers on the podium; six at 1st place, two at 2nd place and four at 3rd place.
At the 106-pound class, Nic Lowe earned his 3rd place finish against Dylan Jones of Okoboji by way of fall. Along with him at the 3rd place spot, Kelly Griffin defeated Wyatt Sprecher of Southeast Valley, Gowrie by way of fall at the 126-pound weight. Sean Brennan won against Humboldt’s Ty Gargano after a 5-0 decision at the 132-pound bouts, earning 3rd as well. And finally, at 3rd place, 160-pounder Colton Andersen defeated Cole Bingham of Webster City by way of fall.
120-pounder Lucas Carter started the E-Hawks off in the 2nd place spot on the podium winning against Cresten Craven of Humboldt by fall. And, the final 2nd place winner of the night for the E-Hawks goes to Jon Lace II who earned a No Contest victory against Humboldt’s Walt Delanoit.
Now onto the champions of the day, 138-pounder Ryan Brennan continues to impress with a tough fought victory against Jordan Vankham of Webster City after a nail biting 3-2 decision in Brennan’s favor was earned. Next up, Brad Wirtz at 145-pounds pinned Nick Gasca of Webster City. Then Bret Hoyman took his opponent Evan Estlund of Webster City for a ride winning by pin fall at the 152-pound mark.
Mason Griffin dominated in his championship round against Webster City’s CJ Hisler by a major decision win of 10-1. Matthew Wirtz won his spot atop the podium by pinning Humboldt’s Logan Nilles. Finally, Jordan Anderson at the 285-pound class won by fall over Trey Shannon of Webster City.
The E-Hawks will be marching forward on their way to the end of the season and for their chance to claim their place on the biggest mats of the State. They will next compete on February 11 at Osage for the Regional matchups.
