Abbie Schany finds her rhythm while Ben Dunlap hits for another 20+ night.
The Emmetsburg boys’ and girls’ basketball squads traveled to Sioux Central High School on Tuesday, January 21 to take on the Rebels in a non-conference matchup. The girls’ team headed into this game with an 8-3 overall record and a 4-1 record following a defeat to the then undefeated Okoboji Pioneer squad.
As a team, the girls were able to outplay the Rebels in most, if not all, areas of the night by securing 20 rebounds, only giving away 5 rebounds, earned a 33.3% three point percentage off of 5 of 15 shots, and earned a 44.7% field goal percentage after going 17 of 38 from the field.
Leading the Lady E-Hawks in scoring on the night was junior Abbie Schany who was able to score 16 points, 5 of 7 from the field and 3 of 5 from the trey. Abbie was also able to score half of her 6 attempts from the free throw line. Senior sister Molly Schany led the team in rebounds reeling in seven with five being on offense; Molly was also able to earn one steal on the night.
By the end of the game, the Rebels were just never able to mount any sort of comeback and fell to the now 9-3 Lady E-Hawks by a score of 53-27. The Rebel girls are now 8-5.
The boys’ squad were in a must win situation as they were headed into this game following a 63-32 loss against South O’Brien on January 16.
This turned out to be a back and forth nail biter as the boys were able to mount a successful night as well. Going 18 of 39 as a team from the field and earning 27 rebounds, the boys still continue to plague themselves on turnovers, but this time giving up just as many opportunities to score as their opponents with 16 on the night. The team was solid at the free throw line, however, scoring 14 of their 19 attempts and earning a 73.7 free throw percentage.
Junior Ben Dunlap went off on the Sioux Central team going 8 of 10 from the field, 8 of 11 from the free throw line, and made 1 of 2 three-point shots. Dunlap ended his night with 25 points and eight rebounds leading his team to victory with a final score of 51-46.
The boys’ squad now sits at 6-6 on the year while they sent the Rebels to a 6-5 overall record.
Both squads will be matching up against what will surely be a test of resolve against a talented Estherville Lincoln Central Midget girls’ team and an underdog waiting to bite boys’ team who sits at 5-7. That matchup will be at Estherville High School starting at 6:15pm.
