Mason Griffin claims only championship spot in invite, struggle to stave off Fort Dodge Dodgers.
The Emmetsburg E-Hawk Wrestling team traveled to Clear lake on January 11th to compete in the Clear Lake Invitational. The team completed the tournament sitting at a 3rd place finish with Mason Griffin being the sole champion for the team.
At the 106-pound class, Nic Lowe was able to find victories against Rafe Arbegast of West Fork, Sheffield by way of fall and against Creston/Orient-Macksburg’s Justin Parsons (Fall). Lowe did drop a match against Fort Dodge’s Max Bishop, but was able to find a victory against Jacob Vais of Charles City (Fall) to earn his 3rd place stance on the podium.
Brad Wirtz (145lbs) was paving the way for the team’s first 1st place victory on the day. After defeating Brandon Harris of Algona by a 10-2 major decision, a pin fall against Hayden Hoffmeyer of Forest City, and then receiving a bye, Wirtz was to meet Brandon Mills of Fort Dodge. Unfortunately for the E-Hawks, they would have continued issues with the Dodger wrestlers and Wirtz fell to a 6-0 decision against Mills.
Bret Hoyman was next up and again the potential for a 1st place finish was eminent. Earning not one, but two major decisions on the day, Hoyman won 12-0 against Saint Ansgar’s Lorne Isler and 12-2 against Kristian Gunderson of Forest City. Fortune would have it, once again, though another defeat in the championship round against Fort Dodge Dodger Kody Cook earning a 2nd place finish at the 152-pound weight.
It seemed like no matter what, the team would have difficulty earning any 1st place finish. That was up until Mason Griffin found his groove once again. Griffin was able to pin West Fork, Sheffield’s Carson Nuehring and made light work against Dylan Zimmerman of Fort Dodge earning another major decision for the E-Hawks with the final score of 12-0. Off into the Championship round, Mason wrestled hard against Elliot Sinnwell who is 18-4 on the season. The back and forth battle ended with Griffin earning the top spot on the podium after downing Sinnwell 7-4 by way of decision earning the first and only championship spot for the E-Hawks.
The E-Hawks will be competing in the second to last team dual of the season on January 14th against South Central Calhoun and Manson- NW Webster. Then, on January 18th, the team will be facing off against the whole Twin Lakes Conference.
