Following a difficult 2018-19 season, Wolverines begin competition on December 5
Following a difficult wrestling season last year, the West Bend-Mallard team began their preparation for the 2019-2020 season on November 18th.
The Wolverines were unable to find many victories in dual competition with just one win against a team on the December 18th dual where North Union fell to the Wolverines 40.0-23.0.
Individually, Connor Fehr showed the most promise in his junior year with the Wolverine squad. Fehr, who wrestled last year at the 170-pound and 160-pound weight classes, found a lot of success recording 20 falls against his opponents. Several of his matches were also won from forfeiture and that led him to being able to compete with some of the best competition in the Palo Alto area with losses against the likes of Treyton Cacek and Spencer Roth of Graettinger-Terrill.
At the end of the season it was Fehr who had the best shot at heading to State competition, but fell short in the final meet of the year against Spencer Roth during the 160-pound bouts during the 1A Sectional 7 meet.
With a small number of wrestlers on the team, Coach Payton will be sure to have to use his creativity to bring success to the team this year. Connor Fehr will be entering his senior year with the squad and hopes will remain high that he will find his ticket to the Wells Fargo Arena.
The Wolverines will open their first dual on December 5th in Emmetsburg against Pocahontas Area, Sioux Central, Storm Lake, and Emmetsburg.
