West Bend-Mallard Boys Basketball Preview

Following a skid to end last year’s season, Wolverines aim to improve on rebounds and 3-point shooting

The West Bend-Mallard Boy’s Basketball team ended their 2018-2019 season with a skid. Finishing their final 13 games 1-12, they look to bring their junior classmen dominated squad up from their 5-15 overall record.

Graduating seven seniors, Coach Jerald Zaugg will rely on his now experienced group of seniors and juniors to lead the Wolverine team to more victories and a stronger defense.

“Our main improvement this year needs to be rebounds”, Coach Zaugg says. “Even though we’re taller this year, it needs to be a [concerted] effort to box out and go after the ball”.

Last year’s leading scorer, now senior Thomas Fehr, ended with 305 points for the Wolverines and averaged 15.3 points per game. Out of the 304 attempts at scoring he was able to complete 104 earning him a 34.2 field goal percentage. Defensively, Fehr assisted the team below the basket earning himself 96 rebounds with 78 of them being on the other end of the court. He was also able to assist the team in steals earning the third most with 30.

Coach Zaugg wants to free the shooters of the group by attacking the hoop from the inside and then freeing up the outside edge shooters for more three point shot opportunities. Last year, out of the 431 3-point shot attempts, the team made 120 which earned a 27.8% from beyond the arc. When attacking the hoop and drawing fouls, the team went 118/229; a 51.5% free throw average.

“Offensively, we are going to try and be more even by trying to both [pound] the ball inside and shooting the three”, Zaugg said.

Coach Zaugg will continue to instill the same sense of hard play during this season. His squad will begin practicing for their season today, November 18th, in hopes of a season that will hopefully bring fun and lifelong development.

“Just like every year, we are going to instill the idea of playing hard regardless of the score and give it our best”, Coach Zaugg said. “All the while, hopefully having some fun”.

The Wolverines will play the Titans of Graettinger-Terril on December 3rd to begin their season.
